The halal supermarket sweep is coming to the United States.
But don’t expect to see halal or kosher products in the stores.
The sweep is still a work in progress.
The new plan is for shoppers to be able to shop online, at participating restaurants, and by mail-order.
Halal and Kosher products are not being included.
Consumers will also be able order online from the stores, but there are no plans to offer them at retail locations.
Halalt products can be found in grocery stores and grocery pickup stores, as well as at convenience stores and restaurants.
Halavans will be able pick up items from participating restaurants and convenience stores, and grocery delivery and delivery service will be available in some markets.
Halakha, which is a Jewish dietary law that allows for some non-Jews to wear the headscarf, will be included as a kosher or halal option in some grocery stores, the American Council for Judaism says.
The roll-out will start early next year, but retailers and restaurants won’t start to sell them until the fall.
The American Jewish Congress is helping to fund the halal grocery roll-up.
Halachic standards vary by region.
Some halal supermarkets in the Northeast have halal options, while in the Midwest and Southwest, halal is limited to certain kosher foods.
For now, retailers are just selling kosher products at retail, but that’s not likely to change anytime soon, Rabbi Nathan Leventhal, president of the American Jewish Committee, told the Jewish Daily Forward.
“Halal is not going to be in the supermarkets in a few months,” Leventha said.
He added that halal will be the new norm.
“The goal of the sweep is to make sure that people are able to choose a kosher supermarket or a halal store that is just as kosher as it can be,” Leavenhal said.
In 2018, a halakha roll-back was introduced in the United Kingdom.
The first halal stores opened in October 2018, and they will be phased out gradually.
In the meantime, kosher stores will remain open and offer kosher products.
There will also still be a halala supermarket in the UK, where halal products are sold, according to the British government.
